Sihanoukville is located on the coast of Cambodia about halfway between Thailand and Vietnam, on the Bay of Thailand. It is a spread out tourist town enjoyed by both foreigners and local people from all over the country. Three sides of the town are bordered by beautiful tropical beaches and many small islands. The area is popular because of the famous seafood restaurants, bars, Buddhist temples, casinos and the many beaches, some being crowded with hundreds of tourists – and others virtually secluded and empty.
Cambodia is a Buddhist country, and here in Sinanoukville you are likely to see many monks walking around in the morning, collecting food and money to maintain the Temples. Most light incense in their homes and businesses in the evenings – creating a calming and peaceful atmosphere throughout the town.
Visitor numbers have been steadily rising here for years now, but with the recent initiation of flights from Siem Reap – these numbers are sure to rocket with the large and relaxed beaches on offer.
As the main attractions in the area are the miles of beaches, it is no surprise that the Water Sports industry is booming. There are various agencies around town offering all kinds of activities – at the moment Scuba Diving is the most popular because of the new Five Star PADI Dive centre. Even if you have never taken part in these sports before, there are many training courses and instructors ready to help. Windsurfing, fishing and snorkeling are the other most popular activities.
Beaches, Islands and Nightlife
The Islands of Koh Rong, Koh Rong Saloem, Koh Thmei, Koh Ta Kiev and Koh Russei are very rewarding – and can be reached in a small amount of time by boat. Sunset and early evening on Serendipity are great crowd pullers, while Otres beach - with its bohemian vibe - is rising with new, hip accommodation and a popular windsurfing outfit. Every night backpackers converge on Serendipity and Ochheuteal beach for cheap drinks and dancing at JJ's, Sessions and Dolphin Shack.
Despite of hot weather throughout the year, Sihanoukville is a holiday destination that can be visited at any time. Sihanoukville ‘s weather is divided into two seasons: the dry season from November to April and the rain season from May to October. The best time to visit Sihanoukville is the time between rainy and dry months which is October and November when the air is the most coolest and less rainy offering better comfort levels. Heat lovers tend to flock to Sihanoukville during December and January to take advantage of the bearable heat and sunshine.
