Luang Prabang lies on the Mekong River in Northern Laos and is a charming example of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures, with many buildings remaining from the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its unique, well-preserved townscape illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct cultural traditions. The town is situated on a peninsula formed by the Mekong River and its tributaries in a basin surrounded by limestone hills that dominate the landscape.
The town was designated as the first UNESCO World heritage site in the country, and awaiting you is a stack of mystical discoveries. Just a walk down the streets in the town is rewarding in itself, but the peninsular section is packed with beautiful temples.
Every morning in Luang Pra Bang monks can be seen out on the road collecting alms, the belief being that those who give alms earn merits for their next life. This is an ancient tradition which is a symbolic connection to the spiritual realm to show humbleness and respect. It involves giving as an act of charity towards those less fortunate. Tourists line the streets in the mornings awaiting the hoard of monks walking down the main road.
Kuang Si Falls
These falls lie some 30km outside the town of Luang Prab Bang. It is worth taking a whole day to visit them as the multi-tiered waterfalls offer great swimming opportunities at the different stages. The picturesque area is easy accessible by tuk-tuk, or by hiring a motorbike and driving yourself there.
