Translating in English as ‘Bay of Descending Dragons’, according to local legend the spectacular formations of Halong bay were created as a family of dragons travelled from sky and mountain to settle in the ocean, thrashing their tails and shifting their vast bodies to carve out vast valleys and canyons that were soon flooded with water. For thousands of years the rugged limestone karsts half-submerged in glittering emerald seas have been a source of wonder for locals and travelers alike.
Situated in the Golf of Tonkin off of Vietnam’s North Eastern Coast, the Halong Bay area has a border spanning 120km, encompassing 1,969 islands of various sizes, many named for the shapes and creatures they are thought to resemble. The most famous of which include the ‘Man Head’, ‘Incense Burner’, ‘Sail’ and ‘Fighting Roosters’ islets. In the hollow hearts of the larger islets can be found mysterious grottoes and spectacular caves of limestone formations, including Thien Cung (Heavenly Residence), Dau Go (Driftwood) grottoes and Sung Sot (Surprise) and Tam Cung (Palace) caves.
Halong Bay has many links to the history of Vietnam. For example, there are such famous geographical sites as Van Don (site of an ancient commercial port), Poem Mountain (with engravings of many poems about emperors and other famous historical figures), and Bach Dang River (the location of two fierce naval battles fought against foreign aggressors). It is also a region of highly-concentrated biological diversity with many ecosystems of salt water-flooded forests, coral reefs, and tropical forests featuring thousands of species of animal and plant life.
With all this in mind, the 18th meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (in Thailand on December 17th, 1994), officially recognized Halong Bay as a natural heritage site of worldwide importance.
