It is relaxing and easy to enjoy a good few days here, with the friendly locals and calming atmosphere, one can find leaving the small town very difficult. The few vehicles that do venture down the narrow main street share it with buffalo and cows, and just about everything in the town is within walking distance spread along one riverside street.

Wat Phu Champasak
The main attraction here is the Angkor period ruins that lie 8km south of town. The temple complex overlooks the Mekong River and was an important Hindu temple during the Khmer Empires rule. Set on the hillside, the UNSECO World Heritage site is small compared with the monumental Angkor-era sites in Cambodia or Thailand, but Wat Phu offers a mystical atmosphere through the crocodile stone and shady trees that cover the area.

Tree Top Explorer
This attraction is all about adventure and having fun. With its recent ‘experience of a lifetime’ award for Laos, it is about enjoying yourself and immersing yourself within the nature of the forest. The zip line allows you to ‘fly’ across the treetops and deep ravines with the adrenaline created of being weigh-less. Trekking is involved through some pristine areas of forest and coffee plantations, and if that is not enough excitement for you – there is even abseiling available!

The best time to visit Champasak  is the cool season which runs from November and March. The rainy season which begins in May and ends in October is also a good time of the year to visit with everything so lush and green. However, it does make your trip a bit uncomfortable with muddy roads and land leeches.
